petrova-crkvaPeter's Church

On a small hill, just outside Novi Pazar, you’ll find the Peter’s Church (Petrova Crkva), built in the 7th century in place of an ancient Ilyric temple.

The church has been damaged and restored a number of times, and only a part of the original structure survived up to this day. That part is the early Christian baptiserium, a small christening pool, which can be seen today. It is believed that this is where some of the first Slavs, who arrived to the Balkan Peninsula in the 6th-7th century, got christened.

Church also has frescoes from 10th, 12th and 13th century. The building is locked, and the key is with the old lady living in a little house just by the graveyard surrounding the church.

Just next to the church is a large, old cemetery with very interesting carved tombstones.

The church can easily be reached on a walk from Novi Pazar.
